Gutter replacement in Lake Macquarie
Updated October 2026
Gutters fail quietly. Rust creeps along the base, joints drip, and one summer storm later water is pouring over the fascia, into the eaves or down inside a wall. Gutter replacement is one of those jobs that costs far less than the damage it prevents, and new Colorbond guttering lifts the look of the whole roofline while it is at it.
We are a referral service. Tell us what is happening and we pass the job to one of the licensed, insured local roof plumbers we work with, who will quote it free.
Signs your gutters are done
- Rust spots, pinholes or visible daylight along the gutter base
- Water overflowing in moderate rain, not just in cloudbursts
- Sagging runs where brackets have failed or the fall has gone wrong
- Stained or rotting fascia boards behind the gutter
- Pools of water sitting in the gutter days after rain, which means the fall is wrong and rust is coming
Patching a rusted gutter buys months. Once corrosion shows in one section of a continuous run, the rest is usually close behind.
What replacement involves
A typical job strips the old gutters and downpipes, checks and replaces damaged fascia where needed, then fits new Colorbond gutter profiles with correct fall to new or existing downpipes. Warm-season downpours here are intense, so the tradies we work with pay attention to capacity: bigger profiles, overflow measures and extra downpipes where a roof catchment needs them. Leaf guard is worth discussing at the same time on the treed streets around the western lake and the older eastern ridge, where gutters fill with litter every season.
Why gutters go early around the lake
Two things shorten gutter life here, and they work from opposite directions. Salt corrodes the outside, and this council area gets it from both the ocean and the saltwater lake, so a gutter on a lakefront street is in the same marine environment as one on the beach. Trapped leaf litter then rusts it from the inside, because wet debris sitting in the base keeps the steel damp long after the rain has stopped. Together they take guttering well below the life the brochure quotes.
A lot of the older housing stock across the eastern ridge, the Cardiff and Glendale corridor and the lakeside villages is on its second or third set of gutters already, and original fascia boards behind them often need attention when the gutters come off. Positions near the water at Marks Point, Belmont and Croudace Bay are where the corrosion shows first.
What gutter replacement costs
Guide pricing only, and gutter jobs vary more than most because length, height and fascia condition drive the price. Replacing gutters and downpipes on an average single-storey home commonly lands in the low thousands, with two-storey homes, long runs and fascia repairs pushing higher. Quotes are normally priced per lineal metre plus downpipes. If the roof itself is also tired, price the roof work at the same time, since access equipment is already there. See the roof restoration cost guide for how the pieces add up.
Safety and licensing
Gutter work means hours on ladders and roof edges, which is where most height injuries happen. The tradies we work with are insured and equipped for it. Gutters and downpipes connected to stormwater drainage are licensed plumbing work in NSW whatever the job size, so the work goes to a licensed roof plumber. Expect a licence number on the quote.

Frequently asked questions
How long do Colorbond gutters last?
Typically 15 to 25 years, with positions near the water at the shorter end. Keeping them clear of leaf litter is the single biggest factor in how long they go.
Can just one section be replaced?
Yes, and for isolated damage that is reasonable. But gutters corrode at a similar rate along a run, so if one section has rusted through on age alone, replacing the lot usually works out cheaper than repeat callouts.
Do I need to replace downpipes at the same time?
Not always, but it is worth having them checked. Undersized or poorly placed downpipes are a common cause of overflowing gutters, and fixing that during replacement costs little extra.
Is leaf guard worth it?
On a treed block, usually yes, because it keeps the wet litter that rusts gutters from the inside out of the run. Choose a metal product rather than a plastic one near the coast, and have it fitted with the gutters rather than bodged in afterwards.
Will new gutters fix water coming into the eaves?
If the cause is overflowing or back-flowing gutters, yes. If water is getting in higher up the roof, that is a roof repair. If it is coming in now, see roof leak repairs.
